Robotics Software Engineer

Early-stage engineering firm San Francisco, CA Direct Hire Engineering $135,000 - $250,000

Job Summary

Join an early-stage team developing industrial robotic systems for real-world manufacturing challenges in aerospace, energy, and defense. As a practical, deployment-focused engineer, you'll design software for motion planning, computer vision, and real-time control, deploying code directly to physical robots that reach production in 1-2 months. Your work will help scale automation to meet growing customer demand across critical U.S. manufacturing workflows.

Essential Functions

  • Design and develop software for industrial robotic systems across motion planning, computer vision, and real-time control
  • Write, test, and deploy code directly onto physical robots, with most work reaching production systems within 1-2 months
  • Work across the full robotics stack as a generalist, contributing from perception to planning to system integration
  • Travel to customer sites up to 2 months per year to deploy, debug, and support robots in real manufacturing environments
  • Build tools, interfaces, and infrastructure like GUIs and workflows that enable reliable robot operation on the shop floor
  • Contribute to key architectural decisions and help scale robotics stack, including motion planning frameworks

Required Qualifications

  • 2-6 years of experience in robotics software engineering, with focus on Python and deployment to real-world systems
  • Built and deployed software on physical robotic systems, not just simulation, ideally industrial robot arms or manipulation
  • Integrated vision systems like cameras and depth sensors with robots for real-world tasks including calibration and perception-to-action loops
  • Experience with ROS or similar robotic middleware
  • Strong Python skills to write production-quality code deployed to robots
  • Strong hands-on experience in at least one of: motion planning, computer vision, or robot learning
  • B.S. in Computer Science, Robotics, or Mechanical/Electrical Engineering

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with robotics frameworks like Drake or similar
  • Working across the full robotics stack
  • Strong robotics and manufacturing background
  • Experience in industrial automation companies
  • AI/ML experience
