Senior Engineering Manager (Core Services)

Job Summary

We are seeking a high-caliber Senior Engineering Manager to lead a backend-focused engineering team responsible for the core systems, APIs, and infrastructure that power our primary products. This role is designed for a leader who is fundamentally a strong backend engineer, capable of balancing technical architecture and high-level strategy with hands-on mentorship and team growth.

Essential Functions

  • Lead and grow a team of backend and platform engineers to build scalable, reliable systems
  • Drive execution across planning, prioritization, and delivery of core backend services
  • Own the technical direction of backend services and APIs, ensuring high performance and security
  • Partner with product and front-end teams to translate requirements into robust architectures
  • Collaborate with data science teams to productionize models and integrate decisioning systems
  • Work with infrastructure teams to improve system reliability, observability, and developer experience
  • Contribute to architectural decisions and guide the long-term evolution of the platform
  • Mentor and develop engineers while maintaining a high bar for hiring and code quality
  • Support incident response and ensure systems meet established SLA expectations

Required Qualifications

  • Proven experience in engineering management (non-director level)
  • Strong individual contributor background with experience in architecture, PRs, and code reviews
  • Experience building B2B API-based products at scale
  • Experience managing high volumes of API calls and maintaining high uptime SLAs
  • Ability to lead technical discussions with staff and principal level engineers
  • Balanced mix of hands-on technical skills and people management capabilities

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience as a senior staff-level engineer or former founder/CTO of a smaller company
  • Experience in data-centric products, fintech, or cybersecurity industries
  • Preference for modern tech stacks over legacy frameworks

Compensation & Benefits

Salary range: $200,000 - $260,000 per year
