Automation Engineer
Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Automation Engineer to design and implement a fully automated 5-axis machining cell from the ground up. This role focuses on creating lights-out production capabilities through standardized tooling, fixturing, pallet strategies, and advanced monitoring systems. The position combines hands-on shop floor work with systems-level engineering to maximize efficiency and enable unattended overnight and weekend operations.
Essential Functions
- Define standardized tool sets and tool wear parameters to optimize part coverage while minimizing unique tooling requirements
- Design standard vise and workholding systems that reduce fixture variety while supporting a wide range of parts
- Develop and own pallet strategies for job assignment and sequencing to maintain continuous unattended operation
- Specify and implement machine monitoring hardware including spindle load, torque, and vibration sensors for proactive defect detection
- Define next-generation quality inspection processes incorporating technologies such as CT scanning, in-machine probing, and automated CMM programming
- Lead selection and implementation of CNC machines, wash stations, and quality equipment from requirements through vendor evaluation and acceptance testing
- Prove out new parts through first article inspection and process qualification for unattended production
- Collaborate with software engineers to integrate automation workflows and advance lights-out manufacturing capabilities
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related STEM field
- 3-5 years of direct experience in CNC machining and manufacturing engineering
- Deep hands-on experience with 5-axis milling, CNC programming, and machine shop operations
- Familiarity with major CAM packages, G-code, macros, and in-process probing
- Experience defining standard tooling, workholding systems, pallet strategies, and leading equipment selection
- US citizen or lawful permanent resident due to ITAR requirements
- Ability to work full-time on-site five days per week
Preferred Qualifications
- Background in aerospace or defense manufacturing environments
- Experience running or engineering automated cells with pallet and linear systems
- Hands-on experience machining hard alloys such as titanium and Inconel
- Participation on collegiate Formula SAE or motorsports teams

Education & Certifications

Compensation & Benefits
Salary range is 150000 to 200000 depending on experience and qualifications. This is a direct hire opportunity with competitive total compensation.
