Senior Mechanical Engineer

fast-scaling robotics startup San Francisco, CA Direct Hire $165000 - $190000

Job Summary

We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to own the core End Effector subsystem end-to-end for autonomous robots supporting AI data center infrastructure. This hands-on role requires a generalist who thrives in a small-team environment, driving designs from first principles through fabrication, assembly, and validation while collaborating closely with software and electrical teams.

The ideal candidate brings deep experience in precision electromechanical systems and is comfortable making high-impact decisions with real autonomy and budget responsibility in a fast-paced startup setting.

Essential Functions

  • Own the End Effector subsystem end-to-end including design, analysis, fabrication, assembly, and validation
  • Integrate electromechanical systems with sensing, load cells, and precision linear motion components while meeting tight tolerance requirements
  • Drive design decisions using FEA, hand calculations, and trade studies to ensure robust performance before fabrication
  • Interface closely with software and electrical teams to align mechanical systems with sensing and control requirements
  • Work hands-on in an in-house machine shop iterating on steel and aluminum hardware from concept to functional prototypes in days

Required Qualifications

  • 5-10 years of experience designing precision electromechanical systems in robotics, aerospace, or automotive environments
  • Proven track record owning a mechanical subsystem end-to-end at a fast-moving hardware company
  • Hands-on experience integrating electromechanical systems including load cells, force sensors, and precision linear motion components
  • Deep knowledge of precision motion components such as ball screws, linear stages, bearings, and tolerance stack-ups
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills interfacing with software, electrical, and controls teams
  • Mechanical engineering degree

Preferred Qualifications

  • Startup or small-team experience designing full sub-assemblies under resource constraints
  • Experience with steel and aluminum fabrication processes
  • Advanced fluency in FEA and hand calculations with emphasis on analytical validation prior to simulation

Technical Skills

  • SolidWorks or equivalent CAD software
  • ANSYS or equivalent FEA tools
  • Hand calculations for structural and mechanical analysis
  • GD&T application and interpretation
  • Tolerance stack-up analysis
  • CNC machining and in-house fabrication
  • Precision linear motion system design
  • Electromechanical integration with sensors and actuators

Education & Certifications

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field required. Advanced degree preferred but not mandatory.

Compensation & Benefits

Base salary ranging from $165,000 to $190,000 annually depending on experience, plus equity and comprehensive benefits. Relocation support available for exceptional candidates.
