Head of Robotics Engineering
Job Summary
We are seeking a Head of Robotics Engineering to lead our robotics software and firmware organization. This hands-on technical leadership role serves as the critical bridge between high-level software and low-level firmware, embedded systems, and controls. Reporting directly to the CTO, you will manage and grow a team while actively contributing to architecture, code, and technical direction for advanced robotic systems.
Essential Functions
- Lead and grow a team of 5-15 engineers spanning firmware, controls, planning, and teleoperation while acting as a hands-on technical leader who writes and reviews production code
- Own the architecture and roadmap for robot-side firmware including real-time control loops, sensor and actuator interfaces, safety systems, and onboard compute software
- Bridge the gap between high-level software and lower-level firmware, embedded systems, ensuring seamless integration across the full robotics stack
- Drive hardware root-cause investigations across mechanical, electrical, and firmware domains, converting field failures into corrective actions
- Set engineering standards including code review practices, testing and validation for safety-critical systems, and release discipline for software running on physical hardware
Required Qualifications
- 8+ years of experience in robotics engineering (or 5+ years with a PhD)
- Currently working at a robotics company in the US with direct experience shipping robotics products
- Hands-on manager who has led a team of 5+ engineers across firmware, controls, and hardware domains
- Deep expertise spanning both embedded systems and controls or manipulation
- Proven experience with humanoid or complex multi-DOF robotic systems
- Hands-on technical leader who continues to write and review production code
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with teleoperation systems or data collection pipelines
- Background in safety-critical systems development and validation
- Demonstrated success scaling engineering teams in a fast-paced robotics environment

Education & Certifications
MS or PhD in Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Computer Science. PhD in robotics strongly preferred.
Compensation & Benefits
Base salary range of $200,000 to $350,000, depending on experience and qualifications. This is a full-time, on-site leadership opportunity in the San Francisco Bay Area.
