Mechanical Engineer
Job Summary
We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer with 1-4 years of experience to lead the mechanical design and prototyping of compact seeker units for next-generation missile defense systems. This hands-on role focuses on optomechanical packaging, vibration and shock analysis, and rapid iteration of hardware in a fast-moving startup environment. You will work directly with the lead hardware engineer to deliver prototypes on accelerated timelines where mechanical engineering is a critical capability for the team.
Essential Functions
- Design and prototype compact mechanical assemblies integrating optical, electrical, and structural components while preserving light paths and alignment under stress
- Perform vibration, shock, and thermal analysis to ensure hardware meets demanding environmental requirements
- Rapidly iterate on designs with full cycles measured in days, including design, build, and test phases
- Develop optomechanical mounts and packaging that maintain photonic alignment while minimizing size and weight
- Transition prototype designs toward fabrication-ready solutions with manufacturability considered from the start
- Solve cross-functional problems across packaging, analysis, and system integration in an ambiguous, high-speed setting
Required Qualifications
- 1-4 years of mechanical engineering experience with hands-on hardware prototyping in aerospace, defense, or robotics
- Experience completing full design-build-test cycles on real hardware
- Proficiency in SolidWorks for design of compact electro-optical assemblies
- Background in vibration, shock, and thermal analysis
- BS in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field
- Ability to work on-site full-time in the Los Angeles area
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience at a fast-paced hardware company such as those in aerospace or defense sectors
- FSAE, robotics team, or equivalent hands-on project experience
- Optomechanical design or alignment-sensitive assembly background
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize speed and ship prototypes quickly rather than seeking perfection
Technical Skills
- SolidWorks
- Zemax
- FEA and structural analysis
- Rapid prototyping techniques
- Vibration and shock analysis
- Thermal analysis
- Optomechanical packaging
- MIL-STD-810 testing
- Design for manufacturability
Education & Certifications
BS in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field is required.
Compensation & Benefits
Salary range is $120,000 to $200,000 depending on experience and qualifications. This is a full-time, direct hire position.
