Growing robotics technology company San Francisco Bay Area, CA Direct Hire Engineering $180,000 - $250,000

Job Summary

Seeking a Senior Embedded Systems Engineer with 5+ years of experience to own the firmware and embedded software stack for general-purpose robots. This role sits at the intersection of hardware and software, developing motor control firmware, sensor interfaces, real-time communication infrastructure, and reliable embedded systems. High-ownership position helping define how the platform scales from lab prototype to deployed fleet.

Essential Functions

  • Develop motor control firmware, sensor drivers, communication protocols, and hardware abstraction layers for general-purpose robots
  • Own hardware bring-up including writing low-level peripheral drivers, validating new PCBs, and debugging firmware/hardware boundary issues
  • Implement and optimize motor control algorithms (torque, velocity, position loops) on bare-metal and RTOS platforms
  • Develop and maintain real-time communication stacks (EtherCAT, CAN, SPI, I2C, UART)
  • Contribute to firmware safety architecture, establish coding standards, and build CI/CD and hardware-in-the-loop test infrastructure

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in embedded firmware development in C/C++ with production-deployed product experience
  • Motor control firmware or actuator firmware experience (FOC, torque control, or similar on bare-metal/RTOS)
  • Industry experience in robotics, automotive, industrial automation, or consumer electronics
  • Experience scaling firmware from prototype to production deployment
  • Strong C/C++ for bare-metal and RTOS environments (ARM Cortex-M, TI C2000, or similar MCU families)
  • Communication protocols at driver level: EtherCAT, CAN, SPI, I2C, UART
  • Hardware bring-up experience: JTAG, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers

Preferred Qualifications

  • Python experience for test automation or tooling
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines for embedded systems
  • Background in safety-critical firmware development
